Why I will support ‘Back the Ban’…
Paul Walter writes about the campaign that the Labour Party has launched to ‘Back the Ban’ on fox-hunting. Paul won’t support it because the party tag makes him feel uncomfortable and indeed I agree this is a weakness of the campaign and it’s something that Labour should recognise.
Putting your party logo all over a campaign which should be broad-based to be effective, and is about an issue that can unite people across party lines, looks like an attempt to gain sectional political interest. Having said that, to not support something you believe in because of the same sectional view is to be guilty of the same attitude.
I support the maintence of the ban on fox-hunting and think it is one of the creditworthy things that the Labour Government have done. Hunts are expecting this to be the last Boxing Day before the repeal of the ban however there is no intellectual or moral case for this repeal.
The Independent suggests that this is an outgrowth of Labour’s ‘class war’ strategy. Maybe it is but it is hard not to see the Conservative's pledge to repeal this ban as a sop to sectional elite interests, especially when, as the paper itself notes;
"The sport of ripping apart foxes, on the other hand, is decisively opposed by large majorities whenever a poll on the subject is taken."
