And another reason to hate the TUC:
The predominantly male Trade Union Congress yesterday backed a motion decrying the stiletto heel as a sexist health and safety hazard. Activists claimed that while glamorous footwear is appropriate for the ‘Hollywood catwalk’, many women are compelled to totter around in vertiginous shoes. Union leaders insisted that female workers should instead sport ’sensible shoes’ to avoid injuries and long term foot and back problems.
Women wear high heels in the work place largely because they want to. Someone is going to have to explain to me how the male members of the TUC telling me what to wear on my feet is remotely liberating or anti-sexist. Actually it’s just plain patronising.
Loraine Monk from the University and College Union warned: ‘This motion allows the TUC to be portrayed as killjoy fashion police who want to control what women wear. ‘We should be having a bigger debate about women’s issues than just the shoes. Stop telling women what to do and suggesting they don’t know what they are doing when they get dressed in the morning. We have settled for arguments about shoes rather than where women’s feet are on the opportunity ladder.’
Couldn’t agree more. Of all the issues facing women today this is not the one I lose sleep over… You’ll have to pry the stilettos off my cold, dead feet…
